Getting Bereavement Right Every Time – Learning Sessions

NHS Education for Scotland has been delivering its Getting Bereavement Right Every Time series to support health and social care staff in managing situations surrounding bereavement and the time of a person’s death. The session's provided an accessible introduction to the topics of grief and bereavement.

Through the use of animated short films, key insights, and practical takeaway messages, the session aimed to help participants feel more confident and better prepared to support individuals experiencing loss.

The sessions are relevant for all staff groups, including non-clinical, administrative, and support roles, as well as those working directly with patients or clients. They provide a safe and supportive space to explore common and important questions, such as:

  • What should I say to someone who is bereaved?
  • Are there words or phrases I should avoid?
  • What if I say the “wrong” thing?
  • How can I manage my own feelings when someone dies at work?

Although the session was not recorded, the learning series will continue throughout 2026, offering further opportunities for staff to build confidence and skills in supporting bereaved individuals.
