New Bereavement Education Film - Different Ways to Say Goodbye: Compassionate Support Across Cultures

We are pleased to share a new film, ‘Different Ways to Say Goodbye: Compassionate Support Across Cultures’, developed as a reflective educational tool for health and social care staff.

The film highlights the importance of understanding and respecting different cultural beliefs, spiritual perspectives and family values in end-of-life care.

In the film, a hospice chaplain tells the story of a young man whose strong spiritual beliefs shaped how he understood his illness and future. While staff believed he was approaching the end of his life, he remained convinced he would recover. He described being guided by his spirits, who were family members who had already died, and they were strongly telling him that he wasn’t dying and this was just a temporary illness.

Through his experiences and those of his partner, extended family and hospice care team, the film explores the complexities that can arise when different cultural perspectives on death and dying come together.

We encourage health and social care staff to watch the film and share it with colleagues and networks to encourage open conversations, compassionate and person-centred care at the end of life.
