New Bereavement Education Film - A Son's Story: A Realistic Approach to End of Life Care

We are pleased to share a new film, ‘A Son's Story: A Realistic Approach to End of Life Care’, developed as a reflective educational tool for health and social care staff.

The film explores person-centred care and the experience of a son acting as Power of Attorney around the time of his mother’s death.

Through one family’s experience, this film highlights the importance of effective communication, shared decision making, and understanding what matters most to people as they approach the end of life, so that care and treatment decisions reflect their values, preferences, and priorities.

The film follows a son reflecting on conversations he had with his mother about dying many years before she was diagnosed with dementia. Later, as her Power of Attorney, he was faced with complex decisions about her care, balancing the potential benefits of medical interventions with her previously expressed wishes, and experiencing the responsibility that comes with advocating on behalf of someone you love.

We encourage health and social care staff to watch the film and share it with colleagues and networks to encourage open conversations, compassionate and person-centred care at the end of life.

View the film below or view it on the Bereavement Education Programme Vimeo channel.
